ARCHITECTURAL GLASS

“Glass is a rigid and difficult medium, and it holds a lot of challenges. In my opinion, nothing has more impact on space than glass in architecture, and this is what excites me.”

“I have a particular interest in designing glass for sacred space. I define this as rooms, buildings or other environments which are used for contemplation, prayer and healing.”

DESIGN FOR THE ST MARY MAGDALENE CHAPEL CHURCH OF ST JOHN THE BAPTIST BURLEY, HAMPSHIRE 2011

This design was created for Jude’s final year’s ‘External Project’, whilst undertaking the B.A. in Architectural Glass at Swansea Metropolitan University.

The design is based on the shape of the Sea Daffodil, a native wild flower of Galilee. This flower was chosen to symbolise St Mary Magdalene, who was born there.

Sections of a mixed media collage were overlaid with water-colours and inks to create a varied but randomly repeating motif.

As the glass encircles the entire chapel, the subtle repetitions of motif and colours would unify the architectural space, creating a sense of order and calm.

The sample panel was constructed of two layers of float glass, acid-etched, painted with enamels and sandblasted.

NB. This was not a real commission. However the project was undertaken with the agreement and support of both the Church Warden and the architect of the chapel, Colomba Cook.
